Thierno Barry scored a hat-trick and set up another goal as Everton cruised to a 4-0 win over Preston North End at Deepdale in the Carabao Cup second round. The French striker, who scored eight goals in 41 games in 2025/26, added to his goal in Saturday's Premier League win over Crystal Palace. He now has four goals for the season, already halfway to his previous total despite playing 38 fewer games.
Everton, who have not progressed past the third round since 2023/24, will face Wolves in the next round. A strong Everton team controlled the game from the start, dominating possession and creating chances against a Preston side who have lost both of their Championship matches. The 10th attempt produced the opening goal when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's floated ball released Vitalii Mykolenko on the left, and he set up Barry for a tidy finish.
Preston improved after the break, but Barry scored his second just before the hour and completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes remaining. Brennan Johnson, who joined from Crystal Palace earlier this month, added a fourth with his first goal since November 2025.
Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom told Sky Sports Football: "It's just frustrating we were going to make the subs and they scored the (second) goal as we had them all lined up. It just changed the game. The goals after that were disappointing. We were playing against top opposition, we know that, but one or two things, fundamentally, don't help you keep clean sheets anyway. It doesn't matter who you are playing against."
