Joey Porter Jr. was back at Pittsburgh Steelers practice on Tuesday. But he did not guarantee he would play in the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 13.
Porter Jr. was taken off the physically unable to perform list on Sunday and put on the initial 53-man roster. His current contract dilemma could keep him from covering any Falcons.
"I don't know," Porter said when asked if he would play without an extension, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. "I got to talk to the guys upstairs and my agents about that."
He then seemed to walk back that comment, but still left the door open for sitting out.
"Yeah, for sure," he said about playing, before adding, "maybe."
Porter, a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He is due to make $3.9 million in base salary in 2026. Several of his fellow 2023 Steelers draft picks have already had notable developments. First-rounder Broderick Jones was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Second-rounder Keeanu Benton, third-rounder Darnell Washington and fourth-rounder Nate Herbig each reached contract extensions.
Porter is unhappy with his situation but not bitter about his teammates getting paid.
