The Rams and Tutu Atwell keep finding their way back to each other. After five seasons in Los Angeles with limited opportunities, Atwell signed with Miami in free agency in March. He hoped to win a bigger role with a team in need of playmakers. That role never materialized. Instead, the Dolphins shipped him back to L.A.
Atwell said he was surprised by the trade. "I was shocked myself," he said this week, via the Associated Press. "I got a phone call. (Coach) Sean (McVay) told me, 'Welcome back.' We're coming back to get me."
Atwell was a second-round pick, No. 57 overall, by the Rams in 2021. His playing time varied widely over five seasons, and many questioned why general manager Les Snead used such a high pick on the Louisville product. When he left for Miami, the plan seemed to be for him to step out of the shadows of Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Instead, his value came from familiarity. The Rams needed depth behind Nacua and Adams, and Atwell had not earned a top-three spot in Miami's receiving corps. A phone call solved both problems.
Now Atwell is back in his NFL home and happy about it. "Nah, man, it don't feel like I was gone," he said. "I'm back with my brothers, man. I just feel great and feel awesome just to be back here and with these great players and guys. I'm just excited."
