USC Upstate men's soccer heads back on the road Saturday, traveling to Birmingham, Alabama, to face UAB. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
The Spartans arrive with a 2-2-0 record and momentum from back-to-back shutout wins. After losing their first two matches, Upstate has outscored opponents 6-0 in the last two games, posting consecutive clean sheets.
Tuesday night in Johnson City, Tennessee, the Spartans beat ETSU 3-0. Josh Zawlocki opened the scoring at 6:10, and Christian Cook and Bennett Leitner added second-half goals. Upstate outshot the Buccaneers 15-6, put nine attempts on goal, and held ETSU without a shot on target.
The attack has been spread around early. Zawlocki, Cook, and Leitner each have two goals through four matches, and Matiwos Rumley has one. Johannes Lund has an assist in each of the last two wins, while Tolu Fabamifobee and Ola Haugsrud each assisted against ETSU.
Goalkeeper Jarrett Wuerslin and the back line have gone 180 straight minutes without conceding. The Spartans limited ETSU to six total shots and zero on goal Tuesday, after also shutting out West Florida in the home opener.
UAB comes in at 1-1-1 after a 1-0 road win over Mercer on Monday. Tony Kim scored in the 15th minute, and goalkeeper Ethan Schulz made five saves for the clean sheet. The Blazers have allowed just two goals in three matches.
Kim and Lucas Nordin have UAB's two goals this season, while Schulz and Gael Zackrisson have the team's two assists. UAB has taken 37 shots and holds a 22-14 edge in corner kicks.
Saturday is the second all-time meeting between the programs. UAB won the first matchup 3-1 last season in Spartanburg.
