The Wheeling Men's Soccer Team (1-1, 0-0) begins conference play this Sunday with a short trip across to Pittsburgh to face the Point Park Pioneers. Jack Shearer earned his first collegiate coaching victory last time out, guiding his side to an impressive 3-1 win over Walsh at Bishop Schmitt Field.
Leading the scoring for the Cardinals in that match was Canadian Jon-Michael Gordon, who notched his first career multi-goal game with a brace. He was unlucky not to add more, finishing with five shots and four on target. Joining Gordon on the scoresheet was sophomore KJ Viglundsson, who scored his first Cardinal goal in his home debut.
Another standout performance came from goalkeeper Diego Marquez. The game was high tempo from the start, with 36 total shots and 19 on target between the two sides. Marquez made his first start of the season after being left out against Cal-U three days earlier, and he made seven saves, picking up where he left off last season.
Wheeling have faced Sunday's opponents Point Park eight times in total, winning four, losing two, and tying the rest. Although the Cardinals hold a positive record, they are currently on a two-game losing streak to the Pioneers and fell in this fixture last season to a late second-half goal. That was Wheeling's only away loss to Point Park in four meetings, and with an attack in fine form, they will look to keep the momentum rolling in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
