NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over SUNY Canton on Tuesday afternoon at Sabine Field. The win was the Cadets' second of the season and put them back in the win column.
Norwich attacked early, winning three corner kicks in the first three minutes. Miles Bergeson (Charlotte, Vt.) forced a save in the sixth minute, and Nick DePeppe (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fired a shot just wide in the 11th. Jacob Salisbury (Fayetteville, N.C.) put a shot on target in the 16th minute, and Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.) tested the Kangaroos' goalkeeper twice, including another on-target effort in the 19th.
SUNY Canton created their first dangerous chance in the 24th minute, but Norwich goalkeeper Victor Kalorin (Raleigh, N.C.) made the save. Two minutes later, the Cadets broke through. In the 27th minute, Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) finished off a chance from a diagonal ball by Shea Perkins (Carl Junction, Mo.) to give Norwich a 1-0 lead. It was Hassan's first goal of the season.
SUNY Canton earned a corner late in the half, but Norwich's defensive shape held firm. The Cadets took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Kangaroos 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
Norwich picked up where it left off to start the second half. Brian Baek (Fairfax, Va.) tested Bovee with a shot on target in the 50th minute, and SUNY Canton answered moments later with a chance saved by Kalorin. Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) forced another save in the 61st minute and fired another attempt wide minutes later.
SUNY Canton pushed for an equalizer late, but Kalorin and the backline stayed composed. Kalorin made another save in the 56th minute to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Cadets added a second goal with 20 seconds remaining. Norwich was awarded an own goal off SUNY Canton at the 89:40 mark, making it 2-0 and putting the match out of reach.
Norwich finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, and earned 13 corner kicks to SUNY Canton's three. Kalorin made three saves to record his first shutout of the season.
The win improves Norwich to 2-2-1 overall. The Cadets return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when they take on Elms College.
