The Eagles are signing tight end Zach Ertz to the practice squad, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reported the move on Monday.
Ertz tore his ACL last season with the Commanders, as noted in this torn ACL report. He began his career as a second-round pick by Philadelphia in 2013 and spent eight-plus seasons there, recording 579 receptions, 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns, with three Pro Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl title.
He was traded to the Cardinals in 2021 and played there through 2023, then had two seasons in Washington. His career totals are 825 catches, 8,592 yards and 57 touchdowns.
There had been speculation about a reunion, and injuries in the tight end room made it more likely. Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL on Sunday and will miss time, while rookie Eli Stowers is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
So Ertz returns to the practice squad healthy and with a real chance to contribute. At 35, he is 11 receptions shy of the Eagles' all-time catch record, held by Harold Carmichael with 589.
If he moves to the active roster and plays, he will get a warm reception from Philadelphia fans, and another ovation if he breaks the record.
