NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's soccer team controlled most of the offensive chances but could not find a goal, settling for a 0-0 draw against Simmons University on Tuesday afternoon at Sabine Field.
The Cadets finished with an 18-3 edge in total shots and a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Norwich's defense limited Simmons to just three shots over the full 90 minutes.
Norwich pressed from the opening whistle, earning three corners in the first four minutes and creating several early looks. Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) hit the left post in the third minute, while Blythe McQuade (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Heidi Smith (Sammamish, Wash.) and Sophie Guarriello (Barre, Vt.) each tested the Simmons defense in the early going.
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) kept creating chances in the first half, recording four shots before halftime with two on target. The Simmons goalkeeper made six saves in the opening period to keep the Cadets off the board. Norwich goalkeeper Sophie Olivo (Sanford, Maine) made one save in the half, and that would be her only stop of the afternoon as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
After the break, Norwich kept up the pressure. Emma Korrow (Northfield, Vt.) forced another save in the 59th minute, and Guarriello added two second-half shots, including a one-on-one chance with the keeper. The Cadets continued to hold possession in the attacking third and found openings in and behind the Sharks backline.
In the final 25 minutes, Norwich earned three more corners while searching for the go-ahead goal. Smith and Briggs both had late attempts, but the Simmons goalkeeper turned them away. Briggs' shot in the 89th minute was Norwich's last on target.
The draw was Norwich's first of the season despite a significant edge in shots, shots on goal and possession. The defense kept Simmons from building any consistent attacking rhythm. Norwich returns to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Cadets travel to face Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 1:30 p.m.
