Sunderland earned a 1-1 draw at Brentford thanks to an equalising penalty from Enzo Le Fee. The goalkeeper made a good reflex save after Reinildo was beaten in the air, but had little else to do. One player, operating in the "Hume role", was quiet, helping out defensively but rarely involved in possession. The right back was strong defensively and quick to close down, though he offered less going forward than usual. A defender won almost everything in the air and, alongside Danso, kept Igor Thiago quiet, though he had a goal harshly disallowed after a fine finish into the bottom corner.
Danso impressed on his debut, slotting into the defence, aerially dominant, with long throws more dangerous than Mukiele's, though he was turned a little too easily a couple of times. Reinildo gave Brentford little down his side. Sadiki had an extremely strong first half, running all over Sangare, and Brentford had to hook their record signing at half time. Sadiki also got forward well and had a couple of efforts quickly blocked. The captain put in a decent effort, always finding a teammate under pressure and working hard defensively, but was caught flat footed for the first goal.
Le Fee got redemption after last season's penalty miss here, scoring a well taken penalty and delivering a very good all round display. He put in loads of effort off the ball and almost all of Sunderland's best play went through him. He also smashed a shot off the post in the first half. Another player caused Kayode lots of problems, combining well with Reinildo and Sadiki down the left, and his good work in the first half ended with Le Fee hitting the post.
