In Washington, D.C., three Explorers scored in a 3-2 win over George Washington, giving La Salle men's soccer its first Atlantic 10 conference opening victory since October 11, 2013, when they beat Duquesne. Junior Alberto "Toto" Esquivel Meza opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the eighth minute. George Washington equalized in the 34th minute.
Two minutes later, sophomore Davin Millisock scored with assists from senior Alexandru Zama and graduate student Maximilian Retzer, putting the Explorers ahead before halftime. That assist was Retzer's first at the collegiate level. Junior Pedro Amadou, who had come on as a substitute, scored his first goal of the season less than ten minutes into the second half, with Esquivel Meza providing the assist. George Washington pulled one back from a free kick in the final minute, but it was not enough to change the result.
The teams were level on shots with 16 each, though George Washington had seven on target to La Salle's six. Millisock also had three shots and two on goal. Junior Gabe Faust and senior Kyrese Lynch-Bailey each had three shots as well. Zama had two shots with one on target, and sophomore Julius de Vries also had two shots. Retzer, in addition to his assist, made five saves in goal for the Blue & Gold.
La Salle now sits at 5-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while George Washington drops to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1. The Explorers return home for their next conference match against Dayton on Saturday, September 26. The game starts at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium and will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
