The New England Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET for their second preseason game. Both teams held joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday, where quarterbacks Drake Maye and Jalen Hurts got extensive passing work. Starters are expected to rest, so the primary backups will lead the offense.
The game day broadcast information and roster are available, with kickoff set for Aug. 22. Here is how the action unfolded.
The Patriots opened at their own 20-yard line after a holding call on James Hudson III. A screen pass to Lan Larison gained 28 yards near midfield, but on the next third down, Tommy DeVito's throw toward the right sideline sailed too far out of bounds for Kyle Williams. Bryce Baringer's punt pinned the Eagles at their own 22. Will Shipley broke free for an 18-yard run, but Philadelphia's drive stalled after two Andy Dalton incompletions. Braden Mann's 39-yard punt gave the Patriots the ball at their own 16 midway through the first quarter.
On New England's next drive, DeVito scrambled for seven yards and completed short passes to Efton Chism III and Kyle Williams, earning two fresh sets of downs. Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. then broke into the backfield and sacked the quarterback. Baringer's 61-yard punt pinned Philadelphia at its own two, but Britain Covey returned it 21 yards to give the Eagles room. Two completions to Darius Cooper totaled 38 yards, and Shipley's runs pushed the offense to the Patriots' five-yard line.
Starting the second quarter, Shipley ran up the middle for a touchdown. Jake Elliott added the extra point. [Patriots 0 : Eagles 7]
New England began at its own 18 and broke into Eagles territory when DeVito scrambled 36 yards to the Philadelphia 37. Two incompletions and a four-yard JaMycal Hasty carry left them short of the first-down mark. Andy Borregales hit a 41-yard field goal to put the Patriots on the board. [Patriots 3 : Eagles 7]
The Patriots defense then forced a three-and-out. Second-round rookie Gabe Jacas pressured Dalton off the edge on second down, and Kindle Vildor broke up passes on first and third. Vildor nearly returned an interception for a score on the first play, but a roughing-the-passer call on Jacas wiped out the turnover.
DeVito's offense took over at its own 23 and moved past midfield after a 24-yard catch by Chism. Ty Robinson blew past center Jacob Rizy to sack DeVito and force a punt. Behren Morton then delivered a kick that fell into the end zone for a touchback with under seven minutes left in the half.
After a short Eagles drive, Kyle Williams beat his matchup and hauled in a 69-yard touchdown pass from DeVito, giving New England its first lead. [Patriots 10 : Eagles 7]
With three minutes left in the half, Philadelphia found the end zone. From the Patriots' 14, Covey caught a short pass and worked through the middle. Two Carson Steele dump-offs gained 30 yards, and an unnecessary roughness call on Mike Brown added more. [Patriots 10 : Eagles 14]
New England had a chance to regain the lead with just over a minute left, but another Robinson sack ended the drive. The Eagles fielded a punt, but outside linebacker Amari Gainer closed the pocket and sacked Tanner McKee to end the half.
A Borregales kickoff touchback gave the Eagles the ball at their own 35 to open the third quarter. The offense moved to the Patriots' 12 but was stopped on third down. On fourth down, McKee floated a pass to tight end E.J. Jenkins in the back corner of the end zone, but rookie linebacker Namdi Obiazor broke it up to force a turnover on downs.
Taking over inside the 10, Behren Morton's first drive was short-lived after a split-sack between Eagles outside backers Joshua Weru and Jose Ramirez. Morton converted an early third-down snap with a nine-yard pass to Hasty, but a Tejhaun Palmer offensive pass interference call stalled the drive. Philadelphia then took over at New England's 49 midway through the third quarter.
